Otranto is the most eastern city of Italy and the ruins of an old pier are still visible in its port, which prove the strategic and commercial importance that this city has always had in the past, thanks to its position at the entrance of the Adriatic see. The strength of its walls, which where reconstructed by Ferdinando I of Aragon after the siege of 1480, and the impressive castle built by the Aragonese make the city majestic. The Cathedral and the Church of St. Peter constitute what can be defined as the center of the religious cult of the town. The cathedral, built in 1080, is dedicated to the Assumption and it is famous for the mosaic on the floor that goes back to 1165. It also houses the Chapel of the Idruntini Martyrs, where parts of the relics of the martyrs of Otranto are kept: it is a tribute to the 800 young fellow citizens, who in 1480 were slaughtered because they didn’t deny their faith. The St. Peter’s Church is the most expressive example of the Byzantine art in Apulia: built between the 9th and the 10th century, it keeps several frescos of the Italian-Greek school.
